This phrase could not mean that all of Joseph Smith's ancestors were descendants only of Ephraim, because Ephraim's immediate children could not marry each other but were probably married to other Israelites or at least to other Semites. Jesus is known as the rightful heir of Judah, yet even his ancestry contained non-Israelite blood (Ruth the Moabite). That Joseph Smith is a "pure Ephraimite" probably means that if he traced his genealogy back to the time of Jacob or Israel, his "pure" patriarchal line (that is, his father's-father's-father's-father, etc.) would trace directly to Ephraim.
