Using the Bible as a Source to Test the Book of Mormon
Using the Bible as a Source to Test the Book of Mormon
In seeking to discredit the Book of Mormon by comparing it to the Bible, scriptural students should be aware that one of the LDS “Articles of Faith” written by Joseph Smith and canonized by the LDS Church states: “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.” When taken with other tenants of the LDS faith, this means that while the Bible is a great volume of scripture, it is not the source of LDS faith, but rather a useful aid to that faith when used with the proper perspective. As the Book of Mormon is considered a more correct volume of scripture, perhaps it is not the Bible which should be used to explain and correct the Book of Mormon but the other way around (see 1 Nephi 13:9-42; Mormon 7:8-10).
Sometimes we choose to compare similarities in scriptural texts (namely the Bible and the Book of Mormon) because scripture seems to be everlastingly unchanging in its gospel themes and historical patterns–“the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Yet we must also realize that scripture is subject to the control of the Master of All Scripture–The Word. In other words, revelation from the Lord to living prophets, in any age and in whatever manner He chooses to communicate, will always take precedence over past scriptural texts. Scriptural texts, even when inspired, are limited in their communication and application by the amount of text actually written, the language of those who write, and the circumstances of the time. Moreover, as time moves on these records are subject to a multitude of changes. The use of the Bible as the base text from which one judges the Book of Mormon is a subject of a number of articles. Concerning the “problems” one might encounter in attempting such an analysis, the writings of Michael Hickenbotham are cited below. 1
Revelation verses written tradition:
According to Michael Hickenbotham, some Bible cultists today believe that the Bible is inerrant and infallible. They assert that the Bible is “completely authoritative and trustworthy in all that it asserts as factual, whether in matters of theology, history, or science.” 2 They also assert that the Bible canon is closed for all time and is therefore complete and sufficient to answer all important questions. Those that hold these views believe a myth. In the words of Nephi, “they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious” (1 Nephi 13:26).
An anti-Mormon newspaper article once asked the question “When did the apostles ever change what they taught in the New Testament?” The assumption is that because God is an unchanging being, his requirements and commandments never change. Yet, many examples of change may be found throughout the Bible and especially in the New Testament. Consider the following:
1. Killing
a. Forbidden (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17)
b. Condoned (Exodus 32:26-28; Deuteronomy 7:2; Joshua 6:17, 21; 1 Samuel 15:2-3, 33;

Manuscript Problems:
Higgenbotham notes that while one might believe that the original version of the Bible was perfect, the fact of the matter is that no original manuscript exists, nor can one be fully reconstructed. Daniel-Rops quoted Origen (185-243 A.D.) as saying: “Today the fact is evident that there are many differences in manuscripts, either through the negligence of certain copyists, or the perverse audacity of some in correcting the text.” 3
Most authorities agree that soon after the apostles disappeared, a multiplicity of texts rapidly developed. By the Fourth Century, “they had to deal with a great welter of various readings and of mixed texts.” 4 The best that textual scholars have been able to do is to trace our modern New Testament back to five main types of texts at the end of the Second Century. 5 Today, although it is true that we have more than 5000 Greek manuscripts containing all or part of the New Testament, it is also true that no two of those manuscripts are identical.
Errors and Contradictions:
For centuries, Bible scholars have written volumes documenting the errors and contradictions found in the Bible after the “plain and precious” parts were removed (1 Nephi 13:26-40); yet today some are still unaware that errors have crept into modern biblical texts. These errors may have been introduced inadvertently because of imperfect sight, inattentiveness of copyists, human frailties, or they may have been introduced intentionally where contradictions, variations, inconsistencies, or alleged errors were detected during copying, translation, or revision.
The following is a sampling of some of the more obvious problem scriptures . It gives an idea of the abundance of errors found in our modern King James Bibles:
1. Number of Israelites killed by a plague-Num. 25:1,9; 1 Cor 10:8

Scientific Misconceptions:
Students of the scriptures should also realize that the Bible contains a number of scientific misconceptions about life on earth:
1. Jacob’s misconception of genetics (Genesis 30:37-43)
2. Both the hare and the badger (coney) are described as chewing the cud (Leviticus 11:5-6; Deuteronomy 14:7)
3. Fowl are said to creep on all four (Leviticus 11:20)
4. Mythical beasts were considered real:
a. Unicorn (Numbers 23:22; 24:8; Deuteronomy 33:17; Job 39:9-10; Psalms 22:21; 29:6; 92:10; Isaiah 34:7)
b. Dragon (Job 30:29; Psalms 74:13; 91:13; Isaiah 13:22; 27:1; 51:9; Jeremiah 14:6; 49:33; 51:34; Micah 1:8; Malachi 1:3)
c. Behemoth (Job 40:15-17–erroneously identified as a hippopotamus or elephant, see verse 17)
d. Leviathan (Job 41:1-34; Psalms 74:14; 104:26; Isaiah 27:1)
5. Brass (an alloy of copper and zinc) is said to be dug from the ground (Deuteronomy 8:9; Job 28:2)
6. Eagles that bear their young upon their wings (Deuteronomy 32:11)
7. Bats that are classified as birds or fowl (Leviticus 11:13, 19; Deuteronomy 14:11, 18)
8. Whales that are classified as fish (Jonah 1:17; Matthew 12:40)
While these are minor and sometimes only a matter of semantics, they nonetheless illustrate the discrepancies contained within the scriptures.
Missing Scripture:
According to Higgenbotham, many scriptures mentioned in modern Bibles either no longer exist or have been altered to the point that they are no longer accepted as authoritative. These include:
The book of the covenant (Exodus 24:4, 7)
The book of the wars of the Lord (Numbers 21:14)
The manner of the kingdom recorded by Samuel (1 Samuel 10:25)
The book of Jasher (Joshua 10:13; 2 Samuel 1:18)
A book of statutes (1 Samuel 10:25)
The book of the acts of Solomon (1 Kings 11:41)
The book of Samuel the seer (1 Chronicles 29:29)
The book of Nathan the prophet (1 Chronicles 29:29; 2 Chronicles 9:29)
The book of Gad the seer (1 Chronicles 29:29)

An epistle of Paul to the Ephesians (Ephesians 3:3)
An epistle of Paul to the Laodiceans (Colossians 4:16)
An additional epistle of Jude (Jude 1:3)
The prophecies of Enoch (Jude 1:14)
To the above list we can add missing prophecies which include:
Matthew’s reference to a prophecy that Christ would be a Nazarene (Matthew 2:23)
A prophecy that Elias “shall first come, and restore all things” (Matthew 17:10-13)
A prophecy by Jeremiah concerning the 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 27:9)
To these we might add references that do not match Old Testament scripture, such as:
Matthew’s quote from Jesus referring to Zecharias, son of Barachias, being slain between the temple and the altar (Matthew 23:35)
John’s reference to a scripture about “living water” (John 7:38)
James’ reference to a scripture about envy (James 4:5)
John’s reference to wicked deeds of Balaam not specifically mentioned int he Old Testament (Revelation 2:14)
The Apocrypha and books used by early Christians
At the Council of Trent in 1546, Roman Catholics officially adopted a canon of scripture that included the Apocrypha as fully inspired and fully the word of God. These twelve books are as follows:
`Tobit
Judith
The Wisdom of Solomon
Ecclesiasticus or Ben Sirach
Baruch
the Letter of Jeremiah
1 Maccabees
2 Maccabees
additions to Esther
additions to Daniel, comprised of:
the Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Young men,
Susanna and the Elders,
Bel and the Dragon
These books were part of the Greek translation of the Old Testament known as the Septuagint, which was in use in Egypt as early as the second century B.C. The Septuagint was also the version of the Old Testament used by the early Christian church. On the other hand, most Protestants broke with the centuries-old tradition of accepting the Septuagint and all its contents, and preferred the version of the Old Testament which had been preserved in Hebrew by the Jews. Thus to many Protestant and other Christian denominations, these books have essentially become “lost.”
Many scholars have observed that several other books not included in the King James Bible were routinely quoted by early Christians. These include:
The Testament of Levi (3:1-4) quoted by the Savior in the Sermon on the Mount 6
The Testament of the 12 Patriarchs (Ibid., p. 2)
a. Joseph 28:2 (Matthew 5:44)
b. Levi 13:5 (Matthew 6:19)
The Shepherd of Hermas–widely quoted in the church from the Second to Fourth Century A.D.7
2 Baruch–considered as legitimate Christian scripture by the early church (Ibid., p. 3)
4 Ezra (Ibid., p. 3)
Odes of Solomon (Ibid., p. 3)
The Assumption of Moses –quoted in Jude 1:9 8
Wisdom–quoted in 1 Clement (ca. 95 A.D.) 9
Didache–quoted by Polycarp (ca. 136 A.D.) (Ibid., p. 54)
Justin Martyr also gave two examples of writings in the Second Century A.D. that had been removed from Jeremiah 10. To this can be added the complaints of Dionysius, Bishop of Corinth (168-177 A.D.) concerning the falsification of the gospels and of his own letters.11
As soon as the Book of Mormon had been published many began to say, “A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible” (2 Nephi 29:3). They had no idea that such actions were seen in vision and anticipated many centuries before by those who wrote and prophesied concerning the Book. 12
Scriptural Similarities Between the Bible and the Book of Mormon
In introducing this section on scriptural similarities between the Bible and the Book of Mormon, it might be wise to start with some appropriate commentary. Michael Hickenbotham writes that some Christians today question the need for so many similar verses in both the Book of Mormon and the Bible. They sometimes assert that many Book of Mormon verses were copied from the King James Bible, which in their opinion makes the Book of Mormon a fraud. While this might appear to be true to the casual Book of Mormon reader, a closer look at these duplicate texts actually provides an additional witness of the Book of Mormon’s authenticity.
It is interesting to note that one Bible scholar has found that the four gospels attest to the fact that Jesus Christ and the apostles consistently quoted scripture. He calculated that over “ten percent of the daily conversation of Jesus consisted of Old Testament words quoted literally” and nearly 50% of the Lord’s words as quoted by John were quotations from the Old Testament. 13
When we consider the fact that Isaiah is the most quoted of all prophets, being more frequently quoted by Jesus, Paul, Peter, and John (in his Revelation) than any other Old Testament prophet, it should not surprise us that the Book of Mormon also quotes Isaiah more than any other prophet.14
When one considers that New Testament writers literally quoted hundreds of Old Testament scriptures, including 76 verses from Isaiah15 it should not surprise us that Book of Mormon writers did likewise.
If critics of the Book of Mormon are making an accusation of plagiarism, then they are by the same logic indicting their own Bible. Close examination of the Old Testament reveals many passages which are copied nearly word for word, including grammatical errors. Micah, who lived hundreds of years after Isaiah, prophesied word for word in Micah 4:1-3 what Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 2:2-4, without once giving him credit.16 We also find the genealogy from Genesis 5, 10-11, 36 repeated in 1 Chronicles, and much of the history in Samuel and Kings is repeated in Chronicles. Isaiah 36:2 through 38:6 is the same as 2 Kings 18:17 through 20:6.
Paul has been cited as the most original of all New Testament writers, but investigations of his epistles show that Paul often quoted from classical writers, orators, dramas, law courts, sports commentaries, and ancient religious rites. Even the well-known Pauline formula of “faith, hope, and charity,” which also appears in the Book of Mormon, has been found in Babylonian writings. 17
Similarities between a prophecy found in the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 14:11) and in Revelation (17:1, 15) have been noted by anti-Mormon critics, but to make these verses similar one has to bridge fourteen verses of John’s book of Revelation. Moreover, the Book of Mormon itself notes that Nephi saw the same vision as John but was commanded not to write it (1 Nephi 14:25-27). That Nephi used similar words should not be surprising. Many Old Testament writers did likewise when they saw similar visions. Note the similarities between the following Old Testament prophecies and similar prophecies in the book of Revelation:
1. Isaiah 48:12 and Revelation 1:17; 2:8–First and last
2. Genesis 2:9 and Revelation 2:7; 22:2–Tree of Life
3. Psalms 62:12 and Revelation 2:23; 20:13–To every man according to works
4. Zechariah 6:1-3 and Revelation 6:4-8–Red, white, black, and pale horses
5. Joel 2:31 and Revelation 6:12–Sun darkened and moon turned to blood
6. Hosea 10:8 and Revelation 6:16–Mountains, fall on us
7. Zechariah 4:2-3 and Revelation 11:4–Two olive trees and candlesticks(s)
8. Daniel 7:4-7 and Revelation 13:2–Leopard, bear, lion, and dragon
9. Daniel 7:21 and Revelation 13:7–A beast makes war with the saints and prevails
10. Daniel 7:7 and Revelation 17:12–A beast with ten horns
11. Isaiah 21:9 and Revelation 18:2–Babylon is fallen
12. Isaiah 52:11 and Revelation 18:4–Come out of her
13. Isaiah 65:17 and Revelation 21:1–New heaven and new earth
14. Isaiah 60:14-20 and Revelation 21:23–A holy city lit by the Lord’s glory
15. Deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18–Add not unto these words
Critics also cite similarities between Book of Mormon scriptures and Old Testament scriptures written after Lehi’s departure from Jerusalem and the Old World. A typical example is found in 3 Nephi 28:21-22, but similarities between the lives of three Nephites and the misadventure of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3:6) and Daniel (Daniel 6:16) don’t hold a candle to similarities between Peter’s and Paul’s ministries found in Acts:
Acts 3:1-11; 14:8-18–Healed a man lame from birth
Acts 5:15-16; 19:11-12–Healings without direct contact
Acts 5:17; 13:45–Jewish jealousy
Acts 8:9-24; 13:6-11–Dealings with a sorcerer
Acts 8:17; 19:6–Laying on of hands
Acts 9:36-41; 20:9-12–Raised another to life
Acts 10:10; 22:17–Received revelation in a trance
Acts 10:10-48; 22:17-21–Shown in a vision the need to take the Gospel to the Gentiles
Acts 10:25; 14:11-12–Worshipped by men
Acts 12:5-12; 16:25-34–Imprisoned, set loose
There are many events in history, and especially scriptural history, which seem to repeat. The above similarities are just a few examples. As Ecclesiastes says, “there is no new thing under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). [Michael W. Hickenbotham, Answering Challenging Mormon Questions, pp. 193-196, 219, 221] [For a few examples of additional commentary on the subject of similarities and purposeful linkage between scriptural records, see Title Page: “Translated by Joseph Smith, Jr.; 1 Nephi 11:21; 13:26; 13:28; 13:40; 14:26; 14:29; 20-21; 20:11; 2 Nephi 3:11; 12-24; 25:19; 26:4; Jacob 5; Alma 33:11; Helaman 8:17; 3 Nephi 12-14]
To those who still might be wondering how to justify similarities between the Bible and the Book of Mormon, Elder Bruce R. McConkie offers this challenge:
May I be so bold as to propose a test and issue a challenge. It is hoped that all who take this test will have a knowledge of the Holy Bible, because the more people know about the Bible, the greater their appreciation will be of the Book of Mormon.
This test is for saint and sinner alike; it is for Jew and Gentile, for bond and free, for black and white, for all of our Father’s children. We have all been commanded to search the scriptures, to treasure up the Lord’s word, to live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God. (See D&C 84:44) This, then is the test:
Let every person make a list of from one hundred to two hundred doctrinal subjects, making a conscious effort to cover the whole field of gospel knowledge. The number of subjects chosen will depend on personal inclination and upon how broad the spectrum will be under each subject.
Then write each subject on a blank piece of paper. Divide the paper into two columns; at the top of one, write “Book of Mormon,” and at the top of the other, “Bible.”
Then start with the first verse and phrase of the Book of Mormon, and continuing verse by verse and thought by thought, put the substance of each verse under its proper heading. Find the same doctrine in the Old and New Testaments, and place it in the parallel columns.
Ponder the truths you learn, and it will not be long before you know that Lehi and Jacob excel Paul in teaching the Atonement; that Alma’s sermons on faith and on being born again surpass anything in the Bible; that Nephi makes a better exposition of the scattering and gathering of Israel than do Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel combined; that Mormon’s words about faith, hope, and charity have a clarity, a breadth, and a power of expression that even Paul did not attain; and so on and so on.
There is another and simpler test that all who seek to know the truth might well take. It calls for us simply to read, poinder, and pray–all in the spirit of faith and with an open mind. To keep ourselves alert to the issues at hand–as we do read, ponder, and pray–we should ask ourselves a thousand times, “Could any man have written this book?”
And it is absolutely guaranteed that sometime between the first and thousandth time this question is asked, every sincere and genuine truth seeker will come to know by the power of the Spirit that the Book of Mormon is true, that it is the mind and will and voice of the Lord to the whole world in our day. 18

The story of Christ raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-46) and Ammon raising Lamoni from apparent death (Alma 18:40–19:36) have a few similarities but many more differences. The similarities are that in one story a man dies while in the other a man seems to die. In both cases a woman is the principal character who cares and mourns for the man. In both stories a period of time elapses before help is sent for and arrives in the form of a man of God (Jesus Christ & Ammon). In both cases the person is said to be “dead” and that he “stinketh.”
Alma 19:4-5 / John 11:39

Note* While the word “stink” is used 3 times in the Book of Mormon, this is the only time the word “stinketh” is used. The word “stinketh” is only used one other time in the Bible.
H. Both Ammon and Jesus use the word “sleepeth” with regard to the apparent dead man.
Alma 19:8 / John 11:11
he said unto the queen: He is not dead, but he sleepeth in God / Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Note* This word is only used twice in the Book of Mormon and only appears seven times in the Bible.

The relationship of Book of Mormon names to alterations of biblical names was first noted in the Improvement Era 13 (January 1910), p. 238. The list below is taken from a reproduction of that page, however the Book of Mormon names have been rearranged into alphabetical order and biblical verse references have been added. At the top of the page it says that readers will get a view of the prefixes and suffixes, and other modifications that have been applied or effected in the formation of these Nephite names, which have been constructed according to the principles last quoted from Green’s Hebrew Grammar.

Variants of Biblical Names 25
According to John Krueger, the following are names in the Bible from which variant names in the Book of Mormon might have been derived. Readers should be warned that although Mr. Krueger has a doctorate in languages, his specialty is in Mongolian and Turkic languages. He gives no reasoning as to why each individual variant name was selected, however the context of his work is anti-Mormon. Nevertheless, the names do come from the Bible, which represents Middle Eastern origins. So until further research by Brigham Young University professor Paul Hoskisson comes forth on the Middle Eastern origins of Book of Mormon names, this list will be a starting point of study, either to the intent of discrediting aspects of this list or to the intent of building upon them.
